It is well-known for the ruins of a very old castle, however, which means it is a bit of a tourist hotspot in the middle of nowhere. There were hundreds of American senior citizens walking around with headphones and either shouting about how pretty the town was or yelling and pointing about which direction they should go. This trip made me (1) feel like more of a native German than an American (2) realize why Europeans tend to be annoyed with American tourists (3) develop a strong aversion to audio tours, especially when combined with the hard-of-hearing population.
Wertheim is located at the confluence of the Tauber and Main Rivers, so this would have been an important stop for travelers and a great place to enfore a riverway toll back in the day. Now it makes it easier for the Americans to find it and gain access to our seemingly secure little region. Let's check it out.
Good view from the train station
Crossing the Tauber
I don't know what that tower is, but it appears to have been built in two stages and it seems to be leaning
I wonder if this was pre- or post-Pisa?
Either way, one should have learned from the other's mistake
Entering the Altstadt/town center
That looks important
The town center and pedestrian zone. Can you see the seniors with headphones?
We all pray in a yellow Catholic church
The goal is in sight
Just a bit of a hill
Going up
Made it
It does appear fairly old
But there is a cafe
Let's go around back
This should totally be on one of those motivational posters. PERSEVERANCE: This flower for some reason survived against all odds and because of a nearly impossible combination of factors. It is very doubful that such circumstances will ever be presented to you, but you can always keep trying.
Where is the escalator?
Liebliches Taubertal
The Tauber ends right there
Tauber, meet Main
Ginormous cruise ships
